Airline Baggage Policies: What You Need to Know
When planning your journey, it’s essential to understand the baggage rules of your airline. These can vary depending on the carrier, travel class, and destination. In general, airlines follow one of two systems to determine baggage allowances: the Piece Concept or the Weight Concept.
Piece Concept vs. Weight Concept
Piece Concept:
- Common on flights to and from North America, but it is being used more frequently also by European airlines.
- Baggage allowance is based on the number of pieces.
- Each piece must not exceed a specific weight limit (e.g. 23 kg or 32 kg).
- On Tickets the allowed baggage is indicated as "Pc", eg. "2 Pc".
- Example: 2 x 2 Pc means you may check in two bags, each weighing up to 23 kg.
Weight Concept:
- Often used on flights within Africa, Europe, or Asia.
- Baggage allowance is based on total weight, regardless of the number of bags.
- On tickets the allowed baggage is indicated in kilogramme (kg) or pound (Lbs).
- Example: 30 kg means you can check in multiple bags, as long as the combined weight does not exceed 30 kg.
Typical Baggage Allowances by Travel Class
Travel Class | Checked Baggage (Typical) | Hand Luggage (Typical) |
---|---|---|
Economy Class | 20–23 kg (1 piece) | 1 piece up to 7–8 kg |
Premium Economy | 25–28 kg (1–2 pieces) | 1 piece up to 8–10 kg |
Business Class | 30–32 kg (2 pieces) | 2 pieces up to 8–10 kg |
First Class | Up to 40 kg (2–3 pieces) | 2 pieces up to 10–12 kg |
Note: Exact allowances may vary by airline and route. Always check your airline’s baggage policy before departure. If you booked your flights through Natural Destinations, your eticket will also include information about allowed baggage for your specific flights.
Carry-on / Cabin Baggage: What Can You Bring Onboard?
All airlines allow hand luggage, but specific rules apply:
- Size: Typically max. 55 × 40 × 23 cm
- Weight: Usually between 7 and 12 kg, depending on class
- Additionally allowed: 1 personal item (e.g. handbag, laptop bag, or camera backpack)
- Sharp objects (e.g. knives, scissors, razor blades)
- Flammable substances (e.g. lighter fluid, fireworks, camping gas)
- Explosives or ammunition
- Self-defense sprays (e.g. pepper spray)
- Batteries (only certain types allowed – check airline policy)
- Liquids over 100 ml, unless purchased after security
Liquids in hand luggage must be in containers of no more than 100 ml and carried in a transparent 1-litre zip-lock bag.
Our Tip for Safari Travelers
For domestic flights within Africa - such as from Windhoek to the Namib Desert or between safari lodges—stricter baggage limits often apply (e.g. 20 kg in soft-sided bags), due to the small size of aircraft used on these routes. We’re happy to advise you personally about the best suited luggage for your trip to ensure your journey goes smoothly.
