Matobo National Park

Matobo National Park

The Matobo Hills, located in southwestern Zimbabwe, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for their stunning granite rock formations, rich cultural history, and diverse wildlife. The hills cover an area of approximately 3,100 square kilometers and are characterized by their unique balancing rocks and domes, which create a dramatic and picturesque landscape.

The Matobo Hills are home to a significant number of ancient rock paintings, some of which date back over 13,000 years. These paintings, created by the San people, depict scenes of hunting, dancing, and everyday life, providing valuable insights into the region's early inhabitants. The rock art is considered one of the finest collections in southern Africa and is a testament to the area's rich cultural heritage.

One of the most notable sites in the Matobo Hills is the grave of Cecil Rhodes, the British imperialist and founder of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Rhodes chose the Matobo Hills as his final resting place due to their breathtaking beauty and spiritual significance. His grave, known as "World's View," is situated on a high granite hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The site is a popular destination for visitors, who come to pay their respects and take in the stunning vistas.

The Matobo Hills are also home to a diverse array of wildlife, including black and white rhinos, leopards, and a variety of antelope species. The area is particularly known for its large population of birds of prey, such as eagles and vultures, making it a prime destination for birdwatchers.
